Description
Deseo, an original Flamenco work, inspired by Tennessee Williams' Streetcar Named Desire, uses Flamenco music and dance as a language to tell the iconic story of one of the most critically acclaimed American plays of the 20th Century. With some of the most engaging characters in American Theatre, Tennessee Williams' sensuous and emotional work centers around troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois, who leaves small-town Mississippi and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski, and her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans. Blanche's flirtatious Southern-belle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship. This sets the stage for intense drama, as each of the characters fights his or her demons and struggles to escape the world around them, in a violent storm of frustrated dreams, poetry, love, passion, illusion and cruelty.
With its spectacular footwork, precise athleticism and vibrant energy, Flamenco is at once sensual and spiritual, raw and refined, and filled with both restrained passion and electrifying release, making it a powerful and passionate voice with which to tell this mesmerizing story. The production will incorporate live music, created and performed by the singer and guitarist in collaboration with Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, to create the original music and lyrics that provide the context, narrative and emotional ambience so unique to Tennessee Williams’ works, woven into Flamenco’s wide range of rhythms, styles and infinite musical possibilities.
This groundbreaking work, inspired by the work of the most important 20th Century American playwrights, will mesmerizing audiences with its profound insight, high drama and exquisite music and dance.
