PLAN ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDRAISER WITH
A GREENMARKET IN THE SOFI (SOUTH OF FIFTH) NEIGHBORHOOD
Community Project Supported by Partnership with Whole Foods, The Market Company, Miami Life Center, the ReThink and ReUse Center and other Miami environmental groups. The SPE GreenMarket is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st, from 9-12pm.
Grab your reusable bag and head down to the market! The South Pointe Elementary PTA has partnered with Whole Foods, The Market Company and local environmental groups, businesses & community members to host a unique school fundraiser which is open to all.
“We are energizing the entire SOFI (South of Fifth) neighborhood," says Leslie Cooper, a real state agent and resident of the area since 1992. ’SOFI is a progressive, environmentally conscious neighborhood whose main appeal is the enjoyment of the natural elements so integral to the area - clean, open green spaces, wide sandy beaches, and fresh ocean breezes year around. The residents walk, bike and truly enjoy their surroundings. A GreenMarket is a community focus which we are missing here,” says Cooper who is also a parent at South Pointe Elementary and one of the organizers of the event. “Our GreenMarket should also highlight the precious jewel of this area, which our top notch elementary school.”
The Pre-Earth Day Celebration will feature an open-air market with farm-fresh produce, baked goods, food specialty items, fresh garden flowers and herbs, plant sale, smoothie bar, lemonade stand, car wash, used book sale and lots of environmental activities to remind us to be good to our planet and to our bodies.
The public is urged to join in a FREE FAMILY YOGA CLASS on the school’s lawn. “We are so honored to be part of this green initiative,” says Greg Nardi from The Miami Life Center, which was named by the New Times the best yoga studio in Miami.
Besides being able to buy local fresh veggies and fruits, this SPE Saturday morning will be jammed with lots of activities for the whole family. The Whole Foods South Beach Cafe will host a series of workshops: Chef Sheryn will show families how to prepare delicious organic vegetarian lunches, Inga Ambrosia will host free, art therapy sessions. The Miami Botanical Garden will offer seeds for children to plan on handmade pots crafted out of newspaper. The ReThink and ReUse Center, a nonprofit organization that reuses discarded materials to promote early childhood education will invite children to play and discover the fun of playing with repurposed and discarded materials!
The South Pointe Elementary students will head their own initiatives to help raise funds for the school programs. Second graders will manage a lemonade stand, third graders will sell used books collected from a school wide book drive and sixth graders will wash cars. In addition, South Pointe Elementary’s popular "Save the Planet Club," which has 50 members, will host an informational booth and have a "turn a can into art" station. Money raised by the Club that day will go to adopt trees in the rainforest.
South Pointe Elementary is an A-rated public school led by a dynamic principal, Melanie Fishman. Under Fishman’s direction, South Pointe has steadily increased test scores and attracted a growing enrollment. She credits the school’s PTA with making significant contributions to the quality of education at South Pointe. "This is another event which proves that a strong PTA is one of the best assets of a school and its community," said Fishman.
